A Piece of History Feedsack Fabric Necklace #6

Feed sacks bring to mind poverty of the Great Depression but at the same time there is a romance to the idea that women could make something beautiful from something so mundane. Before flour and grains were put into paper and plastic bags they were stored in fabric bags. The farmers wives were resourceful women and took notice that the feedsacks were good fabric to sew and and the producers caught on to this and started making the feedsacks in a variety of prints. When the harder times hit in the early 1900’s women took this opportunity to create patchwork clothing from the beautiful feedsack cloth they had. I created the pendant of this necklace from a remnant of feedsack fabric from the 1930’s. It is hand soldered and set behind a glass bezzle with a cork backing. The pendant was made to look more antique and rustic. It hangs from an antique brass ball chain. The chain measures 18 inches.
